Satya Nadella - Microsofts New CEO
Today was a pretty big day for Microsoft and Indians as the software giant announced their new CEO, Satya Nadella. It was great news to celebrate. Nadella,46, will succeed Steve Ballmer, who had announced his retirement last August, to become the third CEO of the company in
its 39-year history.
Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer welcomed Satya on Microsoft’s cam
pus in Studio D at Microsoft and had hundreds of employees gathering the atrium to watch announcement.
Gates, who was company’s first CEO, said in a statement announcing the appointment,
“Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together, His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth”
Here’s what Satya said :
“I am honored, humbled and excited – three words that describe what I feel. You and Steve have built an amazing company. The technology this company produces has changed the world.”
And Nadella’s first decisions as CEO, he had insisted upon during contract negotiations, was to ask Gates to play a larger role in the company.
“I’ve asked Bill to devote additional time to the company, focused on technology and products,” Nadella said in an email to Microsoft employees.
Gates will remain a member of the board but will step down as its chairman, and he will assume a new role as Founder and Technology Adviser. Lead independent director of the board John Thompson, will be the new chairman, replacing Gates.
Who is Satya Nadella
Nadella was born and raised in Hyderabad, bachelor of engineering in electronics and communication degree from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal and earned an MS in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Nadella worked with Sun Microsystems, prior to joining Microsoft in 1992. At Microsoft he was made the president of $19 billion Server and Tools Business and led a transformation of the company's business and technology culture from client services to cloud infrastructure and services.
